OSL Skel

Haven't posted much for a week or so, and not much activity gone on to be honest (due to work etc). So here's something i've been dabbling at for a little while.

I think I mentioned experimenting with the technique known as Other Source Lighting – where the lighting source comes from well, another place other than natural light – a while back. I'd been wanting to paint this fellow for ages, and I thought that the pose of the figure would lend itself to OSL quite well. So I lit the skull 'candle style' and tried to envisage where the light would fall and in what strength, and what colours the light would fade to. The figure isn't finished yet, but i'm quite pleased with the experiment. The photo was originally taken with a light background, would probably be best to set up the photo with a darker background when he is complete.

Don't think I am ready for OSL yet if ever! But it is an interesting concept and even though unfinished I can see what you are aiming at.

Thanks James. It's quite good fun, and involves alot of blending, I had to adapt my painting style a bit and make it a bit more flowing and less tight. Probably not something i'll do alot of to be honest, but always good to try a new thing.

Looking very promising, you should enter him in the SD painting competition. Would be interesting to see the technique used on a WW2 figure, German MG 34 gunner firing from the hip? in winter camo? coming through a door way? stalingrad style? now look what you’ve started....

Very clever and very effective! I've occasionally wondered how a demo game of a famous night action (like Pegasus Bridge) would look if everything was painted in this way.

Best wishes

Thanks Giles. Maybe that's one for the future for me, a squad of paras painted as if in a night action. Light sources could be from SMGs etc. Might have a stab at that after I finish me napoleonics...

Good AWI stuff on your blog by the way. Loved the shots of the recent game, great scenery.
