Was lucky enough to visit the Waterloo battlefield in Belgium last week, it has been on my bucket list for a long time. I wasn’t disappointed, 200 years has changed the battlefield very little, thanks largely to perseverance of several groups and the Belgian government denying any real development on the site. It was particularly interesting to see how the land lies, something you cannot really grasp from books and reference material alone.
A visit to the huge Panorama painting was a must, and it is very impressive, here’s a snippet of just one of its thousands of little detailed moments in time.

Of all the monuments on the battlefield, the Prussian memorial in Plancenoit stood out the most, looking brand spanking new as if it had been built yesterday.

Feverish work is going on at the Lion village and at Hougomont, no doubt to complete works in time for the 200th centenary this June. I couldn't take good pics of Hougomont due to the abundance of builders vans, but it is looking good after years of neglect with a brand new roof. I hope to visit it again when it is completed.

More progress with these two chaps. Shoulder straps here are white for the senior (and only as far as I can tell) regiment in the province. The blue used on the litewka coat is the old Citadel Regal Blue, highlighted with Coat d'Arms Shadow Grey, this makes the highlight nice and subtle. Black crossbelts are carefully highlighted with Foundry Slate Grey A and B. The covered shakos will be last to be painted due to excess handling.
Started work on the first two troopers in this unit. Unlike the early Perry Napoleonic sculpts created for Wargames Foundry in the early 90s, the newer stuff the twins produce is much more 'in proportion' - and as such the heads/hands etc are smaller, and trickier to paint. Painting the eyes on these guys has kept me on my toes...Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-68557216249842705902015-01-24T15:04:00.001+00:002015-01-27T15:30:00.054+00:00That time of year when I post something new..

So I got a regiment of Perry Prussian Landwehr Cavalry for Christmas from my dad, and it was too much not to pick up the brush again. I'd vowed I wouldn't start a new unit until i'd finished at least 3 or 4 of the 'back-burner' units on my table, but I couldnt resist. Two new formulas for my horsee pals here, top is a chestnut and the bottom one is a dark bay. Working on three of each, then adding a few blacks and a grey for the musician (what little research i've done on Prussian horse colours is that the army would have taken anything they could, especially in the latter years of the Napoleonic Wars, so whatever..). Seriously, I hope to keep painting for a bit now, my new goal is to paint little and often, like a bit every two days, and see where I get to by years end.
I'll post the riders when I crack on. Two are based and ready to go. I have a really nice spangly shiny new cabinet downstairs for all my finished miniatures to live in, and i've vowed that only completed units can get a ticket in there. Happy painting if anyone is still out there reading my stuff!
Apologies for a very long absence. I haven't had the urge to pick up a brush for a long while...

Without rambling on with specifics, after my last post (last November!) my mum took ill and was very poorly for quite some time and this knocked the stuffing out of any creativity I had.

While she has recovered well, it has taken me this long to get my painting mojo back. I've often lost it, but never for more than a couple of months.

Returning to the paint bottles, some are needing resurrection from dreaded dry out, and some new brushes need to be ordered, but I intend to paint and contribute a bit more to my blog from now on. Starting with this skallywag.Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-33386949469152704552013-11-15T19:31:00.003+00:002013-11-15T19:32:53.326+00:00Post Halloween PaintingRandom camera-phone evidence of some recent painting. They are lovely figures. The detail is very fine and is going to push the brush a little but that's good as it'll wipe away any rustiness in my painting having not picked up the brush for a little while. Started on the hoss, using Vallejo Cavalry Brown with Black to get a Dark Bay colour, and got the skin tone of the chap out of the way. Not the best pic but hey ho, wanted to post something to prove i'm still knocking about.
But I thought it appropriate to comment on the recent passing of Fred Funcken. When I was growing up I found the uniform books that he produced and illustrated with his wife Liliane fascinating, and it was the information inside these books that contributed so much to me getting hooked on the colourful details of the Napoleonic period.

It was only recently that I bought up a beautifully preserved German copy of the Funckens' Historiche Uniformen 19.Jahrhundert. With the advances that have been made in indentifying uniforms since the 60's and 70's, these books may or may not now be seen to be totally accurate, but they are beautiful books in their own right and a fine contribution to any collection of military reference material.

Sad to lose someone who contributed so much to the wargaming and military history world. Rest in peace Fred.
Perry's Foundry sculpts once more here. I will be getting hold of the Perry Austrians and mixing them into my Foundry army, they wont be intermingling in units so the proportion differences wont be really an issue.

The litzen is not really correct, especially on the cuffs (brandenburg cuffs on these sculpts, whereas the Guard wore swedish cuffs) but do I really care that much at 25mm?! The crimson piping should only run down the left of the tunic, not both skirt fronts, and should you really attempt cockade colours on chin scale bosses at this size...
Prussian 3rd Foot GuardsWell, here is the result of a few hours painting. The old Foundry Franco-Prussian War range are easier Perry sculpts than the delicate works of art the brothers' produce now, so these were a wise choice for me to ease back into painting. Hadn't picked up a brush for a year and have been pleased with my results. Some of my paints have gone a little bit glutinous but that is easily fixed.
10 more of these chaps to go and then a complete battalion...
Its been a long time since I saw this 'early' work and it's a nice feeling looking over something distantly familiar with new eyes again. I think I was trying to depict some action at the battle of Bussaco, where the thin red line was strung out giving the French some lead, I can't remember the regiment I tried to paint in it (it's supposed to be the 88th Regt of foot).

I can see I was experimenting with oils at the time and I see I struggled with the depth and had a hang up about creases in cloth at the time. I was also trying to get my head around lighting and reflection (especially on skin). I think I have progressed as an artist from back then (though my paintings are few and far between now) but still I was pleasantly surprised to see this old work. Some bits are just plain odd, but as a whole its a part of my past and I kind of like it. Thought i'd post it here for your amusement.

I have been painting mini's this last week, and have almost three finished. The old trickle of figures continues. I will post the results very soon.

Summer's over (it never started here), and I have got the paint itch back (I think).Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-52852020022211230032012-01-18T08:48:00.000+00:002012-01-18T08:48:37.920+00:00Been a while...Yes, it has been a very long while. Apologies to anyone who has stopped by to have a look at some new paintwork and found it very quiet. I had to put the hobby to one side for a time. With little girl number two Ava coming along last year and a big move up to Scotland at the end of the year, the lead pile has been neglected for far too long as real life took all my energy and efforts for a while.

I have finally started fishing the paints and miniatures out of their 'resting' places and hope to start painting again very soon. The itch is returning.Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-9098746963172580452011-05-12T12:55:00.000+01:002011-05-13T21:33:29.746+01:0046 Recce Bren Carrier photo updateI've been lucky enough to access some fairly detailed unit history for 46 Recce on the WWIItalk forum. According to an extract from the Reconnaisance Journal (the Corps' own journal), the regiment concentrated near Udine in northern Italy after the German collapse in 1945. they were ordered into Austria to link up with the Russians and it appears they entered Judenburg in Styria. There is even reference to the units' White scout cars making it over the mountain passes, despite being obsolete (this corresponds nicely with the White scout car in the background in my grandad's pic). Apparently, there was much drinking with the Russians - of Schnapps mixed with Petrol - and plenty of hangovers!

Here are the Divisional vehicle markings for 46 recce. The reconnaissance sign is on the left, and 46th Division emblem is on the right. These can be seen on front wings of the bren carrier in the picture (earlier post). Grandad's carrier also has a spare stowage box bolted along the front, and on top of this appears to be a pyrene fire extinguisher. A little converting is needed when I come to model the carrier.Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-72770355755649926992011-05-11T11:08:00.004+01:002011-05-11T11:13:36.104+01:00SBAI have been nominated for the Stylish Blogger Award by Matt whose great little blog Waterloo to Mons I often have a gander at. Still, better than nothing.

I am hatching a simple new little WWII diorama. I've been thinking of making a little piece for ages for my dad. There's a photo of my Grandad driving his 46 Recce Rgt universal carrier, though where it may be is impossible to plot exactly. I bought a carrier at Salute this year with intentions to start the project. I know the general history of his unit (46 Division), he landed at Salerno, fought on in the Italian campaign, and then they were sent to Greece during the disturbances there.

Every picture tells a story. A few of things about the pic help me.
1. I know that the Recce Corps Khaki beret was officially changed to the Tank corps Black beret in early 1944, (but as always, there is variation, as some men continued to wear the khaki beret until 45). I can't be sure of the beret colour of the chaps, but they appear to be black.

2. The vehicle appears to be one colour, and displays the correct formation signs for 46 Recce, 46 Div. I know vehicles started the campaign in disruptive camo (specific to the Sicilian campaign), but it stuck out like a sore thumb apparently and was requested to be changed around in the latter months of 1943. Finally orders to change to a suitable darker green shade were issued in early 44.

3. What appears to be a M3 scout car is following the carrier round a corner, whether it is part of grandads formation I don't know, but this scout car was being phased out by the Americans in late 1943 and being replaced by the Greyhound. Grandad spoke of his unit having Greyhounds later in the war. Maybe the M3 soldiered on a limited capacity. Incidentally, it looks like summer in the pic.

4. I showed the pic to a friend at work who is German. We came to the conclusion the buildings look very France/German borderlike, maybe alpine. The Division was sent to Austria in April 1945 until August that year, to advance as east as possible to intercept the Russians, and I have read from a veteran of 46 Div that his unit ended up near Graz. Interestingly, the flag on what could be the town hall at right could be an Austrian civil flag. I'm assuming the Division would have entered Austria from Italy and could be white and green if it is the state of Styria, or white and red meaning it could be one of several states including the Tyrol. Carinthia's state flag is yellow over red, though it appears that the flag in the pic has a white upper. Finally, the little girl is blonde which would suggest a more northern european theatre.

It seems practical for me to come to the conclusion that this is near the end of the war, and to assume the carrier is somewhere in Austria, and is a shade of olive green.

I'll be converting the driver in the carrier kit (from Bolt Action, and its a very nice little resin kit), to a likeness of grandad in his sun glasses, along with his two companions. I'll get some pics up soon to make all this clearer and hope to do work-in-progress updates.Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-51586801626305892882011-05-03T08:35:00.004+01:002011-05-03T09:03:17.192+01:00Figometer Annual Tally Report

Here is the sorry looking 'total figures painted chart' for the last year, 19. It's better than the last year's review but still a poor show.

The move is over and we are settling in to a new house. The move kind of spoiled Easter and Isla's 2nd birthday as we couldn't relax and enjoy stuff, and it was made more of a stressful week by both my little daughters being ill, one with chicken pox and one with a vomiting virus!

But, now the dust is settling, I actually painted something over the bank holiday weekend - I almost finished two (Prussian Nap) figures, and after three months without picking up a brush, I was glad to get the 'feel' of it all back. I will be redoubling my efforts this year and really attempt to finish some units. Itching to start the new Perry Prussian plastics I picked up at Salute 2011, but determined to finish my 2 metal battalions of Foundry figures first.Diniumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04477918816829661542noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824528491937185749.post-75456196304393231252011-04-18T09:26:00.006+01:002011-04-21T13:43:47.323+01:00Absence and Salute 2011

Apologies for my absence in here, real life has been getting in the way of all military miniature endeavours recently. Add to this the stresses of having to find another house to live in and it's clear my time has been severely limited of late. I'm moving over the Easter break and after that it's just possible things might settle down and I can get some painting time in.

I did however, make it to Salute this year with my friend Dave. Looking over all the games and products has fired me up again. I had a modest shopping list (austere times) but managed to get the stuff I wanted, mainly the brand new Perry Plastic Prussian Napoleonics (which look lovely), and Dr Stephen Summerfields first volume on the Prussian Infantry 1808-1840, and finally a Warlord games universal carrier for a future diorama project. Oh, and I got the Salute free figure too, a fine Alan Perry ACW cavalryman.

It was very busy this year, as the London Marathon had some kind of registration thing going on at the venue too. The DLR was working normally which made a pleasant change in getting there. The weather was good outside, but as usual, Excel's lighting isn't the best for snapping pics of tiny miniatures without a tripod - Dave had a monstrous lens and his pics were a lot better than mine, so here's a little selection of his handywork. Some great looking games caught our eye, as did a few pints after the 'battle'.

Finally, something I totally missed when actually stood at the Perry's stand purchasing the plastic Prussians, was the three up masters of the latest figures they're working on. They're going to release the Austrians, bless them. I'll be buying a box or two, happy days.
